Back to the Basics - Watercolor for Beginners
The 37th annual Kanuga Watermedia Workshops @ Montreat, March 26 - March 31, 2023 (4 day class instruction March 27–30), will be held at the Montreat Conference Center in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, 18 miles east of Asheville.
The workshops offer the student a choice of twelve artist-instructors, independent study, or 'Paint With Friends – Open Studio’. Our instructors are chosen for their ability to help painters develop and advance their skills. Painting is always a learning experience. Our goal is to help painters sharpen their critical awareness and discover painting gratification. All levels of painters are invited.
Instructors will conduct their individual classes in assigned classrooms. Each student works with one selected instructor the entire workshop. Classes are limited to 24 students, though most classes tend to be smaller. The instructor’s materials list, activity schedules, directions to the Montreat Conference Center, and other general information will be posted on our website.
The Montreat Conference Center is located close to Asheville, N.C., and Interstates 26, and 40; and is served by the Asheville Airport. All workshop activities are held on the 4,000-acre campus.

Cathy Futral Online Art Workshop: Landscape and Architectural Watercolor
This small-scale watercolor painting workshop will focus on techniques, color mixing, design concepts, and subjects pertaining to perspective (atmospheric and linear), skies, trees, buildings, and architectural details. Each day will begin with a demo, handouts per exercise/painting concept, and reference materials to work from. Because the paintings will be no larger than 9" x 11", participants should have the chance to complete one or more works each day. There will be a short critique at the beginning and end of each class and individual support that will occur as needed during the virtual class time.
This online painting class will be taught using the Zoom platform. You'll want to set aside the time and organize yourself with coffee/tea (lunch?)-and your supplies, to be ready. Cheap Joe's will record the workshop and upload it to our YouTube channel. Enrolled students only will have lifetime, unlimited access to the video following the workshop. Specific participant information will be emailed to each student prior to the live event.
